The Terra Alta is a region in the south of Catalonia, located in the province of Tarragona, known for its mountainous landscapes, vineyards, and winemaking tradition. On its eastern edge lies Pinell de Brai, a picturesque town surrounded by the mountain ranges of Vallplana, Pándols, Cavalls, and La Atalaya, with the Canaletes River shaping the landscape to the southwest.
The Terra Alta is a privileged territory, with a natural environment and a unique terroir, where the relationship between the landscape and the vine gives rise to wines of character and authenticity. Its vineyards, located between 350 and 550 meters above sea level, benefit from a dry climate with moderate rainfall, between 400 and 450 liters per year. The predominant winds, the Garbí and the Cierzo, promote the health of the vines by reducing the incidence of diseases, thus contributing to a more sustainable and balanced viticulture.
In this privileged setting, of great scenic and agricultural value, stands the Celler Modernista, an architectural and historical jewel that offers a unique experience where wine, culture, and land merge in perfect harmony.
Rich in limestone and very poor in organic matter.
The soils are mostly of medium texture and well-drained, rich in limestone and very poor in organic matter. In Terra Alta, there are 17 different types of soils, among which the “PANAL” stands out. It originates from an ancient desert and is characterized by its fine sand and silt, as well as its whitish color that reflects the sun, contributing to the proper ripening of the grapes.
Garnacha Blanca and Terra Alta form an inseparable duo and represent 22% of the production area of the D.O. Terra Alta, with around 1,400 hectares planted. This accounts for 90% of the production in Catalonia, 75% in Spain, and it is estimated that one-third of the global production is concentrated in this region.
Garnacha Tinta is the most widely cultivated Mediterranean grape variety in the world, used in almost all denominations of origin in Catalonia, and specifically in Terra Alta, it covers an area of nearly 1,500 hectares.
Modernista Celler is a business project that emerged in 2010 from the passion for hospitality and gastronomy of brothers Joaquim and Fran López Gilabert.
The Cathedral of Wine in Pinell de Brai is a Modernist cooperative building from the early 20th century, designed by Cèsar Martinell, a direct disciple of Antoni Gaudí.
